The long-awaited film Tetris has been released on Apple TV+ streaming service this spring.
This is a semi-biographical story of the Soviet programmer Alexei Pajitnov, who created a productive game that became a hit all over the world. The director of the picture was John S. Baird, known for the films “Dirt” and “Vinyl”.
What is true in this story and what is fiction? We understand. We have already reviewed the novelty and are in a hurry to share our impressions.
The real story of Henk Rogers and Alexey Pajitnov
Before us is not so much a story of selling the rights to a cult video game, but stories about the opposing sides of communism and capitalism.
What is the movie aboutHenk Rogers (Taron Egerton), who discovered the Tetris game in 1988. Deciding to share his find with the world, he was exposed to a dangerous web of lies and a color-changing iron veil.
The picture offered by one spectacular glimpse of the creation of the most popular games in the world allows you to plunge into history in a retro style that combines elements of the past and the present.
New right to purchase the right to play Tetris. It does not claim to be incarnated, since it is partly an artistic fiction of the authors. And this is the only right decision, otherwise the audience would have received a documentary film about the bureaucracy and the difficulties of doing business in the USSR. And most of the timekeeping would be occupied by paper fiber, and not by exposure to the skin.
The authors of the project decided to show the plight of penchant for video games in the Soviet era. Of course, there are enough exaggerations here, but they powerfully attack the full power of the events of that time.
The picture itself is divided into several chapters, which are served in game format. Each action is allocated to a separate “level”, just like in games. Heroes and their surrounding locations appear as an observation, which is then looked around. And with each new level the story becomes harder and more confusing.
An ordinary movie about “papers” and a contract turns into a detective spy thriller with its unexpected twists and numerous intrigues. A simple purchase of video game rights turns into a covert war between the US and the Soviet Union.
Actor Nikita Efremov plays one of those present – Alexei Pajitnov, the author of the original Tetris. However, more attention is paid not to the Germans, but to the opinion of an American entrepreneur building his own business with the help of a Soviet engineer. This is at the same time a story of friendship, and a story about the American dream, and even a short story about external restructuring.
However, the plot revolves around the same ideas. In the second half of the half of the growth dynamics, but to it is gradually declining. Many scenes seem to be inserted for stretching and there is so much timing – the pictures are 2 hours long and it feels like all 3.
There are a lot of “keys” here, but it does not interfere
Tetris is a good example of how no need to make a movie about the USSR. The film is simply oversaturated with “cranberries” about the cruel Soviet Union, which spares no one, and surveillance presides over all citizens. To complete the picture, only a bear, vodka and balalaika are missing.
However, to be honest, I personally did not spoil the impression from novelty. I often repeat relaxing humor, such things are perceived even funny.
The picture cannot be taken as a super-serious creature. This is still not HBO’s Chernobyl, which affects all events – we have a light movie in front of us, which is aimed at entertaining viewers. Here you have spy games, chases on “penny”, and harsh evil Russians. In general, a complete set.
Despite the apparent gags and absolutely caricature features, live inspection film and thus compels you to watch it to the end. He is really interesting genuine.
The only thing I really didn’t like was the actor who played Gorbachev. He speaks Russian with an accent. This decision is stubbornly incomprehensible to me, because other Soviet people were met by Russian actors. Such a decision destroys production a little.
Worth seeing
“Tetris” is a good entertaining movie that leaves only positive emotions behind.
Even despite the presence of small “jambs”, the picture can be detected from the ordinary. It is perfect for watching at home in a cozy armchair with a cup of hot tea. The only pity is that there is no Russian dubbing here: only Russian audio description is available.
