This was reported by Vedomosti with reference to the company Servicepipe, which deals with bot protection. The essence of the sms attack is that the attackers use malicious bots that create large numbers of requests to websites and applications using phone numbers from leaked databases. Thus, they force banks and marketplaces to send multiple SMS messages with confirmation codes for registration, authorization or recovery of number and password. This incurs losses for companies that pay for every message sent.
According to Servicepipe, scammers can send tens of thousands of sms in a single attack. In this case, attacks can be repeated several times a day. The cost of one sending of such a message is on average 1.5-2 rubles. When an attack is discovered, companies’ losses can already reach millions of rubles.
Experts attribute the increase in the number of SMS attacks to the fact that last year a record number of Russian databases – 1.5 billion records containing personal data – were in the public domain.
