Yaodong, meaning “cave house”, is a traditional type of dwelling for the Chinese. The area of such houses can be up to 70 square meters. You will find electricity, water, telephone and internet in most of these residences. In addition, the houses are reinforced with bricks.
At the same time, caves are formed immediately in complexes. So in the end something like a village emerges. Mostly seniors and adults live there. Most caves do not even have a door at the entrance.
The soil in which houses are dug plays the role of natural insulation all year round. In such a dwelling, the temperature in summer is not more than 20 degrees, in winter – not lower than 8-10 degrees.
The choice of cave houses in favor of ordinary ones is sometimes difficult. Many residents of such houses have nothing else. Therefore, often yaodongs are built near major cities.
