The success of Steam Deck impacted a generation of Windows “gaming portables”. Aware that the software does not provide an optimized experience on these devices, Microsoft will be working on creating a portable mode for games.

A leaked Microsoft Hackathon presentation, an event held in September 2022, Windows Handheld Mode. The format aims to fix the primary problems and other inconveniences seen in portable machines.

According to the presentation, Windows Handheld Mode will be a dedicated hub for all user games.. Offering a more integrated experience, the system will include an optimized interface and better content display settings.

One of the solutions suggested by the developers would be a keyboard controlled by a gamepad. Additionally, fixes will be made for some details that hinder gameplay, such as the lack of support for configuring controls in non-Steam games.

When will Windows Handheld Mode be released?

Supposedly, all Windows Handheld Mode concepts can be implemented with the collaboration of “certain experts”. Despite everything, Microsoft did not guarantee whether the portable game mode of the software will be officially released.

On the other hand, new devices with Windows 11 built in, like the ASUS Rog Ally, can act as an incentive for big tech. Who knows, this option may be one of the new features of the next Moments updates or future Windows 12.
