Russian scientists have developed a neural network capable of making diagnoses based on an X-ray. Technology reveals lung pathologies and describes in words the result of its work. In most cases, the doctor only needs to confirm the diagnosis.

Skoltech scientists have developed a neural network for X-ray diagnosis

The development by Skoltech scientists is mentioned in a press release on the university’s website.

The neural network created by Russian scientists independently detects pathologies on lung X-rays and describes them in words. In most cases, the doctor can only read the description and confirm the diagnosis.

According to the developers, in a favorable scenario, the use of a neural network reduces the time it takes to work with an image to 30 seconds. In other cases, the doctor will need to adjust the description.

The neural network is powered by computer linguistics technologies and computer vision models. It was trained on image-text pairs, Skoltech specified.

The developers did not rule out that their solution could be used to analyze MRI and CT scan images. They also allow for the introduction of active learning of the neural network, allowing it to improve based on adjustments made by the clinician.
