Within the walls of the company, work began on a new project in 2019. If the creation of an AI-centric SoC is successful, Microsoft is expected to be able to significantly reduce its reliance on expensive NVIDIA chips.

According to The Information, some Microsoft and OpenAI employees already have access to these chips for testing.

It is worth noting that today NVIDIA is the main supplier of AI chips for servers, with many companies competing for acquisitions.

OpenAI is expected to need more than 30,000 NVIDIA A100 GPUs to commercialize ChatGPT. The demand for high-end chips has reached such a level that NVIDIA’s latest H100 GPUs are selling for over $40,000 on eBay.

Interestingly, experts say Microsoft’s own AI chips are not a direct replacement for third-party processors. But they can significantly reduce the cost of expanding AI functionality in Bing, Office, GitHub, and other Redmond products.
