The computer memory company Netlist convinced the court that Samsung Electronics Corporation infringed a series of patents related to improvements in data processing. A Texas jury awarded the Korean company a fine of more than $303 million, but that’s $101 million less than Netlist’s lawsuit.
In 2021, the company sued Samsung, claiming that Samsung memory used in cloud computing servers and other data-intensive technologies infringes its patent.
According to a court transcript cited by Reuters, Netlist’s lawyer told jurors that Samsung took advantage of Netlist’s proprietary modular technology after the companies used it while collaborating on another project.
Samsung responded by arguing that the patents were invalid and that its technology worked differently than Netlist’s inventions.
After a six-day trial, the jury concluded that Samsung’s high-performance computer memory modules effectively replicated the California-based manufacturer’s technology.
The Korean tech giant deliberately used Netlist’s patents, according to the judges. The defendant’s representatives do not comment on the case.
The California-based developer originally sought $404 million in damages from Samsung, but a jury reduced the award to $303 million.
Netlist shares rose 21% after the verdict on Friday afternoon.
