Known as FLASH, the capsule has a polymer outer shell with corkscrew grooves that allow the electrodes to conduct electrical currents to the stomach lining and stimulate endocrine cells to produce the hunger-inducing hormone ghrelin.

The capsule begins to act 20 minutes after ingestion and causes a significant increase in ghrelin secretion within one hour.

The device can help people suffering from diseases that cause loss of appetite.

FLASH is inspired by the skin of an Australian lizard. The lizard has a surface texture that attracts water droplets that settle on the skin to the animal’s mouth. The outer shell of the capsule has a hydrophilic coating that repels the liquid from the membrane and keeps the electrodes in full contact with the tissue.
