Windows Recall, announced alongside Copilot+ PCs at the beginning of the year, is a new native tool for Windows 11 Takes screenshots of your screen every 5 seconds to create a timeline of your activity. Once captured, the system uses artificial intelligence to interpret the content and identify context.
But the acceptance of the new feature was not good at all: experts feared for users’ privacy, as the tool practically constantly monitored users’ activities. Upon investigation, it was revealed that Recall had not even encrypted the comments obtained from the captures, leaving them accessible in the computer’s memory.
The announcement of the feature instantly created controversy
The target of the barrage of criticism, Microsoft decided to rethink this feature. The company maintained the initial recommendation but implemented extensive security changes to make the source more reliable. Additionally, the company has made the use of Recall completely optional in Windows 11.
Following the review, Microsoft announced that public testing with Recall will begin in October this year. Now the company has postponed the release of the feature again to December (no specific date has been defined).
Microsoft’s reasoning for postponing the tests was quite vague and sudden, and was only announced on the last day of October. In any case, it marks another stage in the development of this controversial Windows feature.
