Researchers from Semmelweis University in Hungary analyzed the results of nearly 27,000 studies and identified the top causes of deterioration in sperm quality: environmental pollution, smoking, age and certain health conditions.

Sperm DNA analysis is the only proven method to determine its functionality. Head of the Andrology Center of the Department of Urology at Semmelweis University, Dr. “The more the DNA is fragmented, the less the sperm has the ability to fertilize, and the risk of miscarriage may increase,” said Zsolt Kopa.

Smoking can increase DNA fragmentation by 9.19% compared to non-smokers. Alcohol and being overweight do not have a clinically significant effect on the breakdown of genetic material, but there is a noticeable trend: more alcohol and more weight lead to more significant fragmentation.

Environmental pollution has a clear negative impact on sperm quality. A meta-analysis found that various factors, such as air pollution or exposure to pesticides and pesticides, increase sperm DNA fragmentation by an average of 9.68%.
