Although the US Department of Defense has already banned the use of artificial intelligence in launching nuclear weapons, a bipartisan group of lawmakers is taking extra precautions.
Senator Edward Markey and Representatives Ted Lew, Don Beyer and Ken Buck passed legislation to block the launch of autonomous AI nuclear weapons. The proposed law would prevent any autonomous system from launching nuclear weapons or picking and hitting targets for the purpose of carrying out a nuclear attack without human supervision.
The bill would implement existing Pentagon nuclear weapons regulations, which require significant human control over decision-making.
The proposed bill aims to highlight the potential dangers of current-generation autonomous AI systems, particularly as AI is booming.
