An international research team conducted a 12-day program of neurostimulation in the right cerebellar hemisphere in 56 healthy elderly people aged 60 years and older.
The researchers found an improvement in the participants’ episodic memory that lasted at least four months after the stimulation ended.
These results confirm the important role of the cerebellum in the regulation and maintenance of cognitive functions, including long-term episodic memory. In the past, the cerebellum was only responsible for coordinating movements such as balance and posture.
However, recent studies have shown that this part of the brain, located at the back of the brain, affects emotional processes as well as cognitive and mental abilities.
