The team of scientists reviewed data from the National Surgery Development Program. The original dataset included more than 5.5 million patients, of whom 44.6% were obese.
It turned out that, compared with normal weight patients, overweight or obese people are more likely to develop infections, kidney failure, venous thromboembolism, or blood clots in the veins after surgery. And patients with grade III obesity and a body mass index of 40 or greater had a higher risk of unplanned readmission.
In addition, operations performed on obese people took an average of six minutes longer. It is more difficult for such people to move and stand up after surgery.
