From May 5 to June 5, Georgia closes the passage of passenger cars through the Kazbegi-Upper Lars checkpoint. This is reported by the country’s Ministry of Finance.

Georgia temporarily closed the Kazbegi-Upper Lars checkpoint for passenger cars

Repair work on this site is indicated as the reason. During the specified period, cars will be redirected to emergency exits, along which large-sized cars move. The department also added that the ticket will operate 24 hours a day.

According to Nikolai Levshits’ Telegram channel, the traffic redirection has caused congestion on the freight corridor. Travelers should be aware that border crossing times may be extended.

Upper Lars is the only checkpoint between the Russian Federation and Georgia. In autumn 2022, after the announcement of a partial mobilization in Russia, a traffic jam formed in this sector of Russians who wanted to leave the country.

According to the Georgian Ministry of Internal Affairs, from September 21 to 27, more than 53,000 Russians entered the country.

Earlier, the opposition party “For Georgia” submitted a resolution to the local parliament on reducing the period of visa-free stay of Russian citizens in the country. Now one passport is enough for Russians to visit Georgia. You can stay in the country for up to one year.
