Previous studies had found an association between inactivity and cancer development, but the causal relationship remained unclear.
Chinese scientists applied Mendelian randomization to cross-check these findings by analyzing data from 408,815 Europeans from the British Biobank.
Researchers found 193 genetic variants associated with a sedentary lifestyle. Of these, 152 genetic variants were associated with TV watching, 37 with computer use, and 4 with driving.
However, the relationship between computer use and driving was statistically weak.
Analysis of the association between sedentary leisure time and 15 cancer types found the strongest association between TV viewing and female cancers.
Thus, watching TV increased the likelihood of endometrial cancer by 28%, breast cancer by 16%, and some types of ovarian cancer by about 49%.
