Federal Supreme Court Minister Alexandre de Moraes ordered Telegram to delete message against PL of Fake News sent to messenger users last Tuesday (9).
The decision also requires the app to send users a new message explaining that the text sent yesterday was considered false information.
“With the determination of the FEDERAL SUPREME COURT, Telegram company reports: The previous message from Telegram characterized CROSS and ILLEGAL INFORMATION attacking the National Congress, the Judiciary, the Rule of Law and Brazilian Democracy for fraudulently distorting the discussion and encouraging users to force parliamentarians. and discussions on the regulation of providers of social networks and private messaging services for the purpose of inciting (PL 2630).
If the company does not comply with the STF designation, the application is suspended across Brazil for 72 hours.. The company will also have to pay a fine of BRL 500,000 per hour even if the app is offline.

In a text sent to users on Tuesday, Telegram directly attacks Bill 2630/2020, better known as Fake News PL. In the message, the software’s leaders claim that democracy is under attack and that the new laws “must put an end to freedom of speech” in the country.
“PL 2630/2020 gives the government censorship powers without prior judicial review. In terms of basic human rights, this bill is one of the most dangerous laws ever considered in Brazil”, the company’s message says. The project, which is currently being discussed in the Parliament, will be voted on in the coming days.
