A serious accusation had to come out to answer whatsappfollowing accusations on social media, including Elon Musk on Twitterthat the messaging platform used the microphone of its users’ mobile phones.

The announcement follows similar posts online from Samsung and Pixel phone owners. Confused users asked, “Why is my WhatsApp using my microphone all the time?” and “WhatsApp uses microphone when not in use” in a series of posts posted on Reddit and the support websites of Google and Samsung.

WhatsApp responded on Tuesday, saying the issue was caused by a “bug” in Android that “incorrectly attributes information” in the “privacy panel”.

Users have full control over microphone settings

Once granted permission, WhatsApp only gets access to the microphone when the user makes a call or records a voice note or video, and even then, these messages are end-to-end encrypted so WhatsApp cannot hear them.

The privacy panel, located in your Android phone’s settings, lets you see which apps are using which permissions. This includes things like access to your location, microphone, and camera, which are required by many apps to work properly.

WhatsApp added that it asked Google to investigate and “fix” the issue.

In a follow-up tweet, WhatsApp stated that it could only access the microphone with permission “when the user makes a call or records a voice or video note.” It said, “These messages are end-to-end encrypted so WhatsApp cannot listen to them.”
