Twitter cleared up, how the encryption of private messages will work, which was previously announced by the owner of the social network Elon Musk. The feature will only be available to Twitter Blue subscribers, verified organizations, and their employees (at a subscription cost of $1,000 and $50, respectively).

Twitter will have encrypted private messages

Users who will have access to the new option will see a lock icon next to the avatar of the person they are talking to. Twitter clarified that only text messages and links can be sent in encrypted conversations. This will separate the encrypted messages from the unencrypted ones.

At the initial stage, it will be possible to use the option only in personal dialogues, but the social network promises to extend this functionality to group chats.

“We use a combination of strong cryptographic schemes to encrypt each individual message, link, and chat response before sending it from the device. They remain encrypted while being stored on Twitter. When the messages reach the recipient, they are decrypted,” the company said in a statement.

At the same time, the social network warns that this type of message does not have protection against intermediary attacks. In the future, the company will use mechanisms that will reduce the chances of man-in-the-middle attacks, as well as warn users about their presence.

Earlier, Elon Musk announced the launch of user-generated content monetization on Twitter. During the year, authors will be able to receive money from subscribers. However, you will need to pay a 30% fee for iOS and Android.
