Referring to the press service of the Ministry of Education and Science, Izvestia reported that a consortium of Russian scientists has developed a candidate type of vaccine against African swine fever (ASF), one of the most dangerous diseases in livestock.

The situation with ASF in Russia is consistently tense. From 2007 to 2023, 2252 cases of the disease were recorded in the country, at the moment, according to Rospotrebnadzor, 26 active epidemics were recorded.

In 2021, Deputy Prime Minister Victoria Abramchenko instructed to develop an ASF vaccine by 2024. In 2022, the Ministry of Education and Science, the Ministry of Agriculture and eight specialized scientific organizations of Rosselkhoznadzor signed a consortium agreement to develop an experimental sample of the vaccine.

The candidate vaccine strain, obtained on the basis of the Federal Research Center for Virology and Microbiology, protects animals from death, but does not prevent infection and mild infection, said Denis Kolbasov, director of FRCWIM. According to the scientist, now it is necessary to carefully study its virulence (infectivity) and understand the possibility of contracting chronic diseases after vaccination.

The press service of the Ministry of Education and Science noted that research will continue to create effective and safe vaccines against African swine fever.
