Former Apple employee Wang Weibao, who is accused of stealing data about the company’s Autopilot, has taken over as the head of Chinese self-driving car startup Jidu. CNBC writes about this, citing several publications in Jidu and Baidu.

Weibao has been the senior technical director of Jidu since August 2021. This joint venture was created by Baidu and Geely.

Between 2016 and 2018, Weibao worked at Apple’s Autopilot and Automotive division. According to the US Department of Justice, Weibao stole all the source code for unmanned vehicles, presentation systems, behavior planning, and more. In the US, he faces up to 10 years.

In May, Jidu revealed a prototype of its first self-driving car, which could be released as early as this year. [CNBC]
