There are several ways to tell if an egg has spoiled. It all depends on how much time you have left and which method is most comfortable for you. But it is better to combine these methods.

You should not rely solely on the expiration date of eggs. However, compared to meat, the shelf life of eggs is much longer. Chilled eggs in the shell can be stored for three to five weeks. You should have enough hard-boiled eggs for a week and enough raw egg whites or shellless yolks for two to four days.

Use the float test to see if an egg is bad. Simply fill the bowl with water and dip the egg into it. Old eggs should rise to the top and fresh ones should sink to the bottom. Just because an egg is old doesn’t always mean it’s spoiled. But if you crack such an egg and it smells bad, it’s most likely spoiled.

Visual inspection of the eggs is another way to tell if all is well. Also, fresh eggs should not smell at all. In a fresh egg, if you break it on a flat surface, the yolk will be shiny and round, and the protein will not disperse too much.

Even after cooking, a bad egg smells strange and its texture resembles mucus or lime.

The safest and most economical way to ensure that eggs are consumed without spoiling is to put them in the refrigerator and consume them within a few weeks.

News cannot be equated with a doctor’s prescription. Consult an expert before making a decision.
