Researchers purchased 228 smartphones from PropertyRoom.com and found that 49 of them did not have a PIN or password, and the other 11 PINs could be easily guessed from popular patterns. The phones accessed contained not only personal data, but also a significant amount of crime-related information, including data on victims. Some phones even had ID photos.

PropertyRoom, the largest online marketplace for items seized in US law enforcement investigations, initially stopped selling phones after investigators made the findings, but they continued to sell them after they were cleared.
