The company’s general manager, Gulnara Khasyanova, said that the production of chips for new international passports at the Mikron factory is progressing steadily under the contract. She emphasized that the production works 24 hours a day and complies with the terms of the contract. Khasyanova noted that there has been a decline in passport demand due to the pandemic, but now the sudden increase in demand requires an increase in capacity and production volume.

The CEO also noted that Mikron has competence in SIM card production. He emphasized that the production volume will depend on the technical requirements of the customer and specific applications such as the use of SIM cards for smartphones and the Internet of Things.

One of the most important tasks, according to Khasyanova, is the replacement of SIM cards for the Internet of things. This is a growing market, with a large number of sensors and specialized devices that play an important role in critical infrastructure, she said. The General Manager emphasized that this issue is being worked on with the operators.

It is worth noting that at the end of January, the public services portal announced that for technical reasons related to Goznak, the issuance of new passports in the regions of Russia is suspended until the second half of March. Later, it was announced that from February 2, the acceptance of biometric passport applications was temporarily suspended.

In early March, Goznak announced that it is currently producing new types of passports only on applications received earlier, and that it is too early to talk about returning to normal production. However, Hasyanova said that in April there will be no problems with new passports in Russia and it will take some time to expand production.
