Researchers from the Institute for Complex Problems of Cardiovascular Diseases have shown that taking magnesium citrate for the biosynthesis of albumin, a blood protein, and creating amino acids can restore mineral balance and prevent the development of atherosclerosis. The scientists’ work has been published in the International Journal of Molecular Sciences.
Normally, calcium and phosphorus perform many useful functions for the body, but their excess causes a number of complications, including atherosclerosis (deposition of cholesterol deposits in the arteries), and its clinical manifestations – myocardial infarction and ischemic stroke.
During their experiments, Russian scientists took the blood serum of patients with atherosclerosis and added to it excessively concentrated solutions of calcium and phosphorus, as well as chemicals that could potentially be used to correct mineral metabolism disorders: magnesium ion donors, albumin. acidic protein and chelate compounds. Blood serum supersaturated with calcium and phosphorus was kept in the incubator for one day. After that, the researchers analyzed how the blood mineral balance parameters changed.
The best results were obtained with magnesium citrate. In terms of its effect, it turned out to be weaker than one of the chelate compounds, but available for oral administration (by mouth) and reduces the level of ionized calcium to the physiological norm, said Anton Kutikhin. researchers.
The researchers are now conducting preclinical trials of the efficacy of magnesium citrate and the proteinogenic amino acids leucine, isoleucine and valine in transgenic mice predisposed to atherosclerosis from birth.
