Deep-sea mapping company Magellan Ltd and Atlantic Productions scanned it during a six-week expedition last summer. The scans created a “digital twin” of the ship, allowing experts to examine every detail and piece together the events that led to the sinking of the ship.
The expedition team used underwater vehicles nicknamed Romeo and Juliet to map all the wreckage, including a 5km-long debris field. The result was 16 terabytes of data, over 715,000 photos and 4K video footage. The high-resolution digital twin provides researchers and historians with valuable information and sheds new light on its devastation in the aftermath of the accident.
