Popocatepetl is 5426 meters above sea level and is part of the Neovolcanic Axis, a chain of volcanoes that cuts across the center of the country. Popocatepetl is a stratovolcano, that is, it was formed from layers of lava and solidified ash. Its geological history dates back to 730,000 years ago, when it originated from the collapse of previous volcanoes. Its current crater is elliptical, over 900 meters in diameter and 150 meters deep. The volcano is home to a diverse ecosystem with a wide variety of flora and fauna. At its top are glaciers that have shrunk in recent years due to global warming. There have been 41 confirmed eruptions in Popocatepetl’s history, the last of which occurred on April 21, 2023, causing ash fall in several municipalities in the states of Mexico City, Morelos and Puebla.
