Alexander Lavrishchev, one of the leading specialists of the Semeynaya clinical network, said that after measles in adulthood, there are six most common complications – pneumonia, encephalitis, otitis media, laryngitis, thrombocytopenia and myocarditis.

The doctor noted that measles can cause “addition” to both viral pneumonia and bacterial inflammation in the lungs. The penetration of the virus into the nervous tissue can lead to encephalitis – inflammation of the brain. As a result, a person experiences convulsions and confusion, and in rare cases, his brain is irreversibly damaged.

In addition, measles can cause otitis media, which can lead to hearing loss, laryngitis, thrombocytopenia (reduction in the number of platelets necessary for blood clotting), and potentially fatal myocarditis, an inflammation of the heart muscle.

The doctor said the only way to prevent measles is to get vaccinated. The vast majority of severe disease cases occur in unvaccinated adults.
