Yesterday it became known that analogues of Wikipedia are already being developed in Russia.

The encyclopedia will be called Ruviki. Its creation was announced during the Russian Internet Forum in the Moscow region. One of the authors and head of the service is the former head of Wikimedia RU Vladimir Medeiko.

According to Medeiko, a project that is not related to the disease is an individual. He has investors, but who exactly is unknown. At the same time, the encyclopedia itself will not be related to Wikimedia.

About 1.9 million articles in the Russian version of Wikipedia. True, they are “finished”. What this means is also not specified.

It is noted that they develop differently than Wikipedia. The project is not opposed to the encyclopedia, it is a different offshoot. At the same time, he “will not cause the wariness that many readers now have.”

How does Ruviki position himself?

Now Wikipedia has an “ambiguous reputation” among Russian users. Cases of “balanced accurate information” will begin in Ruviki. All data will be stored on Russian servers.

The aim of the moderators is to skip the most plausible array of data. This means that articles will be published more slowly, but carefully reviewed. Plus, due to such an expectation, it is planned to send the “maximum number” with the participation of experts. Wikipedia authors will not be poached, but they may want to assemble themselves.

According to a member of the State Duma Committee on Information Policy, Information Technology and Anton Gorelkin, “Russian Wikipedia” will be handled by “the same people who have been working on the Russian-language section of Wikipedia all this time and could not do anything so that it does not turn into a breeding ground for fakes.” .

The authors of Ruvika promise a modern interface, the use of AI, personalization of the accumulation and working environment, and integration with services. It is based on products with source code, as well as our own development. Latest publications available.

Cooperation is planned with Yandex, Sberbank and general AI projects, as well as the LAION, Open Assistant, Databricks and EleutherAI communities. The company wants to take part in testing language models to “create learning choices in various Russian languages.”

Medeiko has already been fired from Wikimedia

As soon as it became known about Ruviki, the head of Wikimedia decided to build Vladimir Medeiko.

According to Executive Director Stanislav Kozlovsky, Medeiko secretly earlier project and did not inform anyone. On the evening of May 24, he submitted a letter of resignation from the company. He has already been removed from his post and expelled from those present.

Medeiko himself claims that the work on Ruviki was not carried out secretly, but only “non-publicly”.

There is no conflict between projects, because both projects are free. We are not competitors in this area. We have a common goal – to possess knowledge. After some time, perhaps there will be some interaction.

— Vladimir Medeiko

When are Ruviki planning to play?

According to Medeiko, the official launch of the service is scheduled for June 2023. In what form it will work is still unknown. Most likely, it will be a public beta test.
