They named the technique BrutePrint. It is enough for him to buy equipment that costs a little more than 1000 rubles. In this case, the resulting set must be connected to the hacked phone.

BrutePrint relies on iterating over fingerprints stored in a database. Unlike password authentication, which requires exact match, fingerprint authentication determines the match based on a certain threshold.

This means that to break this method, it only takes an approximate match to the fingerprint stored in the database.

The researchers tested their enhancements on 10 smartphones, including models such as the Xiaomi Mi 11 Ultra, Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus and Apple iPhone SE.

The time required to unlock each device varied depending on several factors, such as the number of fingerprints stored on the device and the security system used on a particular phone.

Thus, the Samsung Galaxy S10 Plus was opened in the shortest time (0.73 to 2.9 hours), while the Xiaomi Mi 11 (from 2.78 to 13.89 hours) was opened the most.

Interestingly, iPhones were immune to such attacks. This is because the iOS operating system, unlike Android, encrypts data.
