A breakdown during the day can be caused by foods that contain a lot of carbohydrates and sugar. For example, these are potatoes, breakfast cereals, white bread. All of these foods have a high glycemic index, meaning they quickly release sugar in the body. An increase in blood sugar levels causes the body to produce more insulin, causing muscle and fat cells to start absorbing glucose. This can contribute to lower blood sugar levels and lower energy levels.

The amino acid tryptophan also plays a role in sleepiness. It is found in many protein foods, including eggs, fish, and meat. In the brain, this amino acid is converted to serotonin and melatonin, which increase the feeling of relaxation and sleepiness.

The best way to prevent daytime sleepiness is to avoid foods high in carbohydrates. That is, from rice or sandwiches. Eat some protein, healthy fats and vegetables instead. And don’t eat too many foods at once, because the more you eat, the more energy your body needs to digest.
