Led by associate professors James McCann and Changliu Liu, the team created the suit from three layers of material. The top and bottom layers are made of ordinary nylon yarn with metallic conductive yarn strips, and the middle layer is an insulating mesh.

When pressure is applied to the RobotSweater, the conductive strips pass through the holes in the mesh, completing the circuit and generating an electrical signal. This signal helps determine where pressure is applied to the robot’s body. The technology allows robots to respond by stopping motion when physical contact is detected.

Additionally, researchers are exploring the possibility of using swipe and tap commands in a similar way to a touchscreen. The RobotSweater’s flexibility allows it to be used in robot parts that cannot accommodate rigid sensors.
