Tatyana Lyubimova, Head of the Department of Petroleum Geology, Hydrogeology and Geotechnics of Kuban State University, said that the tremors in the Krasnodar Territory reduce the risk of larger earthquakes.

On the night of May 26, four relatively minor tremors were recorded near Tuapse, 4.4, 3.6, 3.8 and 3.6, respectively. According to the geologist, these earthquakes are the result of the redistribution of seismic waves after the 7.7 and 7.6 magnitude earthquakes in Turkey in February.

The expert also states that he does not expect shocks to be redistributed in this area from Turkey. According to Lyubimova, it was supposed to be in Abkhazia and Georgia, and seismic waves were supposed to reach Sochi and Anapa. The geologist notes that the source of the earthquakes is not related to processes deep in the mantle. Despite the small size, the tremors were felt by the public – the epicenter was shallow.

Lyubimova emphasizes that the consequences of such near-surface earthquakes may not appear immediately. After a while, cracks may form in the buildings and the buildings themselves may sag.
