Apple M3 chip: possible news, specs and compatible Mac models

M3 Chips coming soon. Here we are talking about the leaked details of each version.

M3 Chips about to be released

Apple’s next processor M3promises to be a before and after in technology in general. A few days ago we showed you some details of M3 Ultra chip and M3 Max Chip, but now we have complete information and news that are slowly leaking to the Internet.

The MacRumors website became revealing news, specs, and possible compatible Mac models. It seems that the power will be impressive and the possibilities for users will be even greater.

Apple’s M3 chip: that’s all we know

Apple is in the process of developing future versions of its M-series chips. The chips, which are scheduled to be released at the end of 2023 and 2024, will be called “M3”, as we already know. These new M3s will take advantage of TSMC’s latest production technology and provide a noticeable increase in speed and efficiency compared to previous models.

It should be noted that Apple currently has M2, M2 Pro, M2 Max, and M1 ultra chips in its lineup of computers, but it looks like it will be at its next September event.M3 will launch as a Pro option from the start. In fact, it is very likely that the standard version will be released first in late 2023, followed by the M3 Pro, Max and Ultra in mid-2024.

Some technical details shown so far

MacRumors cites Mark Gurman’s Bloomberg column, went further in terms of rumors mentioned, because he was the first to reveal technical details and comparisons between the M2 and M3 versions. Here we give you the breakdown shown:

version m2 M3
Standard 8 CPU cores (4 high performance and 4 low power), 10 GPU cores 8 CPU cores (4 high performance and 4 low power), 10 GPU cores
professional 10 or 12 CPU cores (6 or 8 high performance and 4 low power), 16 or 19 GPU cores 12 or 14 CPU cores (6 or 8 high performance and 6 low power), 18 or 20 GPU cores
max. 12 CPU cores (8 high performance and 4 low power), 30 or 38 GPU cores 16 CPU cores (12 high performance and 4 low power), 32 or 40 GPU cores
Ultra 24 CPU cores (16 high performance and 8 low power), 60 or 76 GPU cores 32 CPU cores (24 high performance and 8 low power), 64 or 80 GPU cores

The M3 Chip slightly changes the CPU and GPU speed on most models.

As we have seen, The standard version will not offer major changes, but the following will have major changes that increase CPU and GPU cores. You just need to see if the price has gone up too much.

Meet the 3 nanometer technology

Current M series chips use 5 nanometer technology provided by TSMC. But the M3 chips are on the way to incorporating TSMC’s latest 3 nanometer chip technology. A smaller node size leads to a higher transistor density, leading to improvements in both efficiency and performance.

3nm chips have the potential to offer up to 35 percent more efficiencyThis means a huge increase in battery life for future M-series Macs. Frankly, this battery life has nothing to do with how powerful this new technology can be.

It should be noted that the 3 nanometer technology is very new. MacRumors stated that TSMC will upgrade its processor over time., as it will leave with 55 percent of its capacity. Therefore, we will wait a bit to find out about the maximum capabilities of the new chip.

Which Mac will have the M3 processor?

Apple followed this launch plan with its processors: Regular M3 chips go to lower-end Macbook Pro and MacBook AirM High-end Macbook Pros use Pro and Max chips; Supercomputers like Mac Studio and Mac Pro use Ultra versions.

So, the range will be as follows:

M3 chip

  • 13-inch MacBook Air
  • 15-inch MacBook Air
  • 13 inch Macbook Pro
  • MiniMac
  • 24 inch mac

M3 Pro chip

  • macmini
  • 14 inch Macbook Pro
  • 16 inch Macbook Pro

M3 Max chip

  • 16 inch Macbook Pro
  • Mac Studio
  • M3 Ultra chip
  • Mac Studio
  • Mac Pro

As we have well stated, Apple’s first M3 Chips may arrive later this yearIncludes updated models of the 13-inch MacBook Pro, Mac Mini, and MacBook Air. The rest will have to wait until 2024.
