The investigation began with irregular betting on little-known tennis matches and eventually led to the arrest of Grigor Sargsyan, the alleged “maestro” of the operation. Detailed records obtained from Sargsyan’s mobile phones revealed a complex corruption scheme in which players accepted payments to manipulate the outcome of matches. The plan involved “money mules”, including working-class Armenians, who bet on select matches across Europe.
Belgian investigator Nicolas Borremans tracked accounts and tapped phones, which revealed a whole network of people working for the “maestro”. Although there are bans and suspensions on the professional tennis tour, the entire operation remains secret due to the ongoing investigation.
