Apple has released an iOS 16 update that fixes a critical vulnerability that could allow Pegasus to infiltrate your iPhone without you noticing. The new version of the operating system for Apple’s mobile phone – iOS 16.6.1 – is already available, and it is recommended to install it right now.

The vulnerability in question was discovered by The Citizen Lab, a cybersecurity team owned by the University of Toronto, which quickly notified Cupertino residents to take the necessary steps to fix it.

The interesting thing is that as soon as the Pegasus scandal broke, Apple updated its software to close all the security holes that allowed it to be installed. The company even launched a system to alert users if they believe their phone is infected with spyware.

However, Canadian experts discovered zero-click vulnerability in iOS 16.6, which was actively used to install Pegasus. He exploit It is called BLASTPASS and does not require any interaction from the victim to take action.

It’s worth noting that the update that fixes this critical security issue is not limited to iPhones compatible with iOS 16.6. Apple has also released iPadOS 16.6.1, so users are advised to install this patch on all supported iPads.

Citizen Lab and Apple did not provide additional technical details about how the vulnerability that allows Pegasus to be installed on iOS or iPadOS 16.6 works. But they explained that spyware infection can be done in a relatively simple way. The attack uses PassKey attachments, the Wallet platform and Apple Pay to send infected images to the victim via iMessage.

More news about this security breach is expected to come out soon. But until that happens, it’s important that users don’t miss out on the iOS 16.6.1 and iPadOS 16.6.1 update.

Let us remind you that the patch is compatible with all models of Apple smartphones, starting with the iPhone 8 and 8 Plus. In turn, the new version of iPadOS can be installed on all iPad Pro, iPad Air third generation and later, as well as iPad fifth generation and iPad mini or later.

Please note that if you have not received an automatic notification that a patch has been installed to prevent Pegasus attacks on your devices, you can manually check for an update. To do this you need to open the section settings iOS 16.6 and iPadOS 16.6 enter the section General and select Software update.

Despite the measures that Apple has taken to counteract the infection of the nefarious spyware from the NSO group, it is clear that they are constantly looking for new ways to introduce it to their devices. Let’s not forget that even though the company behind Pegasus fired its CEO and began a restructuring process, its flagship product is still used to spy on politicians, journalists and activists around the world.

In fact, this year it was revealed that Pegasus is still very active in Mexico, which is a major customer of spyware today. Therefore, even if you think that you are not a suitable target to be attacked by this threat, do not take any chances. If you’re using a compatible iPhone or iPad, update to iOS 16.6.1 and iPadOS 16.6.1 now..
