iPhones need to have Qualcomm’s 5G modem for at least a few more generations. On Monday (11) the chipmaker announced that it has extended its chip supply agreement until at least 2026.

No iPhone model was mentioned in the ad. However, the agreement covers launches in 2024, 2025 and 2026. This doesn’t mean Apple shouldn’t launch its own 5G modem in the coming years, according to Bloomberg analyst Mark Gurman.

It’s possible that the company could introduce the hardware in one of the future models but still adopt the Qualcomm chip in some lines.

Apple is developing its own 5G modem

Rumors have been circulating for months that Apple is preparing its own 5G modem to equip iPhones. In May of this year, The Wall Street Journal reported that the company’s hardware would be available this year.

The launch of the new iPhone 15 will take place this Tuesday (12). The handset of the year should have a USB-C port, but there is no confirmation that the 5G chip will be produced by Apple.

Recently, Apple renewed its partnership with chip design company Arm and foresees a collaboration beyond 2040. The document does not disclose details of the collaboration but guarantees Apple access to the company’s architecture.
