Mobile phone sales in 2023 come as a big surprise as… Apple surpasses Samsung According to IDC’s Worldwide Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker. While IDC cautions that its data is preliminary and subject to change, second research agency Canalys also puts Apple in first place for all of 2023.

IDC estimates Apple’s total mobile device shipments at 234.6 million, compared to Samsung’s 226.6 million. Xiaomi, Oppo and Transsion round out the top five with 145.9, 103.1 and 94.9 million mobile phones sold respectively.

IDC notes that the last time Samsung was not among the leaders at the annual meeting was 13 years ago, in 2010. Apple wasn’t even in the top five back then. Instead, Nokia came in first, Samsung came in second, LG Electronics came in third, ZTE came in fourth, and Research in Motion (maker of BlackBerry devices) came in fifth.

“Apple is not only the only player in the top three to show positive growth every year, but also holds the top spot every year for the first time in history,” said Nabila Popal, research director for IDC’s Worldwide Tracker team. “Apple’s continued success and resilience is due in large part to the growing trend toward premium devices, which now make up more than 20% of the market, fueled by aggressive trade-in offers and interest-free financing plans.”
