Safari uses 3x less battery than Google Chrome on macOS

In a project, the battery performance of the MacBook when using different browsers was evaluated and Apple came out ahead!

Safari passes a rare test

Safari is the default browser for devices with the bitten apple logo. Security is one of the features most emphasized by the company when recommending it over the competition, but of course it is not the only feature. Safari on macOS consumes three times less battery than other browsersaccording to a test that leaves no room for doubt.

Software engineer MrManafon shared a post on Medium to which he would like to respond Why is scanner energy efficiency important?especially considering that most of the applications we use to work depend on browsers. To do this, he compared: Behavior of Safari, Chrome, Arc, Edge, Firefox, Orion, Brave and Opera.

Safari’s battery performance is amazing

Although some users care more about performance, this decision Focus on battery performance when using different browsers on your MacBook Pro 14″ M1 Pro computer with 32 GB M1 RAM and macOS Ventura 13.3.1. To do this, I attempted to run the 20-minute “very stable test”, which simulates my own real-world usage with second-to-second precision, three times per browser to ensure data stability:

In previous tests that involved significantly more tab switching and no WebGL or media consumption, Safari used 10x less than Chrome.

After these tests, the author shared the results comparing the battery performance of Safari and other browsers:

*Safari: It’s 3x more efficient (up to 5x in some tests), flicker-free, privacy-focused, and stable, but it mimics 60fps animation in the long run and is buggy when it comes to WebGL. During The Mac M1 fan never overheats. The difference was much larger in previous tests using more complex web applications and multiple tab switching.

  • Chromium: is king when it comes to performance. It feels more agile and faster. They seem to be dedicating all available resources in the world, running at max fps, and preloading the entire Internet. However, it consumes three times more battery than Safari.
  • Arc: the result was almost on par with Firefox and well below other Blink/Chromium browsers. There is no increase in power usage when using the user interface.
  • Hunter: Really on the energy front worked very well, almost on par with Safari.
  • Firefox: it was Closer to Safari than Chrome When it comes to energy efficiency.

In 2023, Safari was the second most used web browser in the world, and although Google Chrome’s advantage is huge, the preference is gradually increasing thanks to specific needs for which Apple’s browser is considered unbeatable.
