Reliable leaker Kamila Wojciechowska of Android Authority says Google is working on satellite SOS support.
Citing a source, Wojciechowska says the Pixel 9 will use the new Exynos 5400 modem along with additional NTN (non-terrestrial network) capabilities, making the phone “the first to support Android’s native satellite implementation.” The first service provider will be T-Mobile.
Google has made significant progress in integrating satellite messaging support into Android 15. With NTN support in the exynos 5400 modem, the Pixel 9 series will be the first to support Android’s native satellite implementation.
Satellite communications will allow you to send text messages, but not make calls. In addition, a dedicated Satellite Gateway app will allow you to easily communicate with emergency services through a feature called Emergency SOS.
How will satellite communications work?: You will first be asked some basic questions to understand what an emergency is. You will also be given the option to notify your priority contacts, after which you can send a message to emergency services to get the help you need. Many questions will also have predefined answers to choose from to speed up the process.
