OpenAI wants to provide more tools so that the most ignorant will not have problems with the microphone of their mobile phones, because even if you don’t know, ChatGPT can save your conversations in the background even when you are outside the app.

The ChatGPT app on Android and iOS has quietly implemented a new privacy feature that allows you to turn off Background Conversations. Reddit users (via BGR) noticed this tweak on Monday, which appears to be new. In the Voice Mode section of ChatGPT settings, you can now disable this feature.

What does ChatGPT voice mode do?

“Background conversations keep conversations going in other apps or when the screen is off.” Presumably this means that ChatGPT in voice mode “listens” or tracks your behavior as you use other apps on your phone.

Reddit users noticed this appearance in ChatGPT settings on Android and iOS. It didn’t show up for us, suggesting it’s a gradual rollout (we’ve contacted OpenAI for clarification on this). If you have this option, it will appear in your Account Settings under Voice Mode. To turn off background conversations, simply tap to turn them off.
