Renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo has reported (seen via Jukanlosreve on X) that the iPhone 18 will have a rear camera with variable aperture. The analyst says the feature, which can be seen on several Android camera phones, will “significantly” improve the photography experience. The feature was initially rumored to be coming to the iPhone 17 lineup, but it looks like it will debut a year later.

This aperture feature allows light to enter the camera, but the vast majority of smartphones have a fixed aperture. However, there are several reasons why an adjustable or variable aperture would be a welcome addition.
What does variable aperture mean?
The ability to adjust the size of your cell phone camera aperture means you can control the amount of light that hits the camera sensor. You can choose a wide aperture at night when you need all the light possible, and then switch to a narrower aperture during the day when there is plenty of sunlight.
Switching to a wider aperture also gives a shallow depth of field, which is useful for portrait shots since only the subject is in focus and everything else is blurry. This means you don’t have to rely on software to create a convincing portrait image. In contrast, a narrow aperture gives greater depth of field, meaning the entire scene (including the subject and background) is in focus.
Samsung was the first to introduce this feature to the current Galaxy S9 series smartphones in 2018, followed soon after by the OPPO R17 Pro in the same year.
