It’s been almost a year since Honor returned to Europe as an independent brand from Huawei, a company that continues to be affected by restrictions in the US. The Asian firm has done this mainly with the Honor 50; a mobile phone that still retains the essence of Huawei but retains its distinctive features, such as its affordable price and the ability to download apps through the Google Play Store. Now, after the Honor 60 decided not to be sold worldwide, the company has launched Honor 70which retains the most outstanding features of its predecessors, but with more updated features.
Thus, Honor 70 stands out with its design. And for his screen, and for his camera. Without neglecting, yes, performance or autonomy. The smartphone in particular has Snapdragon 778G Plus and a 4800 mAh battery. In fact, these are characteristics very similar to those of many mobile phones that about 500 euros. The price at which you can buy this particular new Honor smartphone.
But are these points enough to compete with the rest of the competing smartphones? Like, for example, Nothing Phone (1), Xiaomi 12X or already reduced Google Pixel 6?
Honor 70 relies on design, including the screen.
We reiterate that one of the most noteworthy features of this Honor 70 is its design. That’s for sure, something different from the terminals we find at this price, which are committed to a more neutral aesthetic – with the exception of the striking Nothing phone (1) – where the back has a matte finish and the photographic module, although pronounced due to the size of the sensors, is thinner. Honor, on the other hand, goes in the exact opposite direction.
Honor 70 has a shiny back, very shiny. This is especially striking because one of the finishes – one we had a chance to try and one the firm has dubbed Crystal Silver – Almost mimics the effect achieved when light is reflected by a diamond.. In fact, Honor has imitated this geometric shape, paired with a gold tone frame and a double rounded photographic module.
Personally, I’m a big fan of phones with matte finishes and not-so-flashy designs, and luckily Honor also has some more subtle color options for those who prefer a less ostentatious design. The rear end, yes, is complemented by a very well structured front end. In particular, the front has rather thin bezels, and they are also symmetrical.. That is, both the lower frame and the upper frame have the same dimensions. The screen is also slightly curved around the edges, which makes the terminal more elegant and thin. Speaking of slimness, Honor 70 it’s barely 7.91 mm thick and weighs about 180 grams.
Honor retains the double curvature of the screen
The front of the Honor 70 also stands out for its screen. This is about 6.67″ OLED panel which also has a Full HD + resolution and a refresh rate of 120 Hz. Overall, it offers a remarkable quality with very well calibrated colors and brightness, which allows content to be displayed correctly even outdoors. In addition, the 120 Hz frequency gives an advantage when viewing the interface and makes it more complete.
Now the curvature on the screen, although making the design much more striking, This negatively affects not only viewing, but also when interacting with content. Depending on how we hold the device, we can often see how we unintentionally click on some interface elements. The double curvature also creates a shading effect, which is especially appreciated when the panel reproduces white tones.
Performance and autonomy: a novelty from Qualcomm for the middle class with some other shortcomings
Honor has chosen a processor that is currently one of the most balanced on the market. Snapdragon 778G Plus. It’s a beefed up version of the Snapdragon 778G announced by Qualcomm last year that improves efficiency mainly, but also gives manufacturers the option to make their smartphones compatible with wireless charging.
In this Honor 70, the Snapdragon 778G Plus processor as well as its 8 GB of RAM do a great job, making the terminal run smoothly even when performing tasks with moderate requirements and without excessive overheating of the terminal. To this, in addition, we must add a 4800 mAh battery, capacity that allows you to reach the end of the day with about 20% and moreover, without having to limit the refresh rate of the screen.
On the other hand, Honor 70 has fast charging up to 66W which allows you to charge approximately 50% of the battery in about 15 minutes. Honor, yes, I forgot a small detail: wireless charging. This feature is not often seen in smartphones under 500 euros, but so far we have not had a mid-range processor that allows you to power the battery through a charging base with Qi technology. However, this is not a reason to exclude this terminal.
This is how the cameras of the new Honor smartphone work
The Honor 70, in addition to its design, also stands out for its photographic section. The terminal, in particular, has a triple lens, in which the main character is the main sensor, Sony IMX800 54 megapixels which, according to the company itself, is able to offer brighter results in various situations. It is also accompanied by a 50MP ultra wide-angle camera as well as a 2MP macro sensor. Honor, on the other hand, has included various additions to improve the photographic section, such as some video-centric modes or improved processing called the Image Engine.
All these characteristics are translated into the correct photographic section, with good results in good light and more than decent detail. In high-contrast scenes, the phone tends to lower the exposure so as not to burn out the brightest areas, but sometimes this also results in excessive darkness in the shadows. On the other hand, in good light, the camera tends to saturate the most intense colors, such as plant greens.
Results, achievements ultra wide angle camera which has a resolution of up to 50 megapixels, are not much different from the main camera. In fact, they retain good detail and near-perfect exposure, and colors are more natural as well. However, the fact that it’s a wide-angle lens makes the edges look a bit washed out. Honor 70 also has 2 megapixel macro camerawhich allows you to take pictures from a distance of about 4 centimeters with decent results.
Honor, on the other hand, has included some interesting modes to improve video recording. One of them, named ‘just cut’, allows you to constantly focus on the subject while the wide-angle camera continues to capture the rest of the environment. Another method called “double video”allows you to record simultaneously from the front and rear cameras.
Honor 70 worth?
Honor 70 available for 549 euros in the version with 8 GB of RAM and 128 GB of internal memory, as well as 600 euros for the 8 GB + 256 GB variant, is undoubtedly one of the most balanced smartphones in the ever-expanding Honor catalog in Europe. Now, is it really up to his competition?
Smartphone Honor has various strengths to cope with the rest of the models available for about 500 euros. One of them, of course, their appearance. The Honor 70 not only offers a slightly different aesthetic, with a glossy finish and a dual photographic module. It is also somewhat thinner and lighter than other smartphones.
your camera, on the other hand, is also very interesting. Not only by results, but also by video recording modes. All this, in addition, without forgetting performance, good battery life or a bright and smooth screen.
That’s why an interesting option for those users who are looking for a good, light and thin smartphone, and it offers balance in the rest of its areas. However, it must be borne in mind that at this price there are very tempting alternatives. The one that I think is more interesting is the Google Pixel 6, which is currently priced at around 500 euros, and while it doesn’t excel in design, it does offer a much more advanced photographic section, as well as much more. software and additional features that this Honor 70 does not have, such as wireless charging. The Noting phone (1), which also shares the same SoC and also stands out with its distinctive design, could also be another interesting option.
