For years, Google’s foldable mobile phone rumors have been constant. However, so far they have not materialized. But the story may change if the latest leak by John Prosser is confirmed, revealing the intended design and key features of the widely cited Pixel fold.
It is true that, in general terms, Prosser’s leaks should be treated with a grain of salt. However, when it comes to Google devices, the company has hit the mark lately with some of its biggest releases. Such are the cases of the Pixel Watch and the redesign applied to the Pixel 6.
If the leak is correct, the Pixel Fold will have a form factor similar to that of the Galaxy Z Fold. Although renders show the design is more in line with that of the Surface Duo, from Microsoft than Samsung’s foldable flagship. The body will be made of metal and glass, and the smartphone will go on sale in two colors: black and white.
Like any other foldable design in the same format, the Pixel Fold will include a screen on the outside, accompanied by a camera. selfie 9.5 megapixels. Opening it will give you access to a large screen, which will also be accompanied by a 9.5-megapixel camera. Unfortunately, the size of both panels is unknown, although the images show rather bulky edges on the inner screen. Also, unlike other similar smartphones already on the market, the internal camera will not be hidden under the screen, but in the upper right corner.
The back of the Pixel Fold, meanwhile, will house the main camera. Its specifications are also a mystery, although it would stand out with its barbed design. Something we have already seen in the Surface Duo 2, although in Microsoft mobile it is located vertically, but here it would be horizontal. Its completion will be similar to what the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro already had.
Pixel Fold will be on the way
The first rumors about the Pixel Fold appeared in 2019, when Google itself confirmed that it was working on various foldable phone prototypes. However, there was some conflicting information about the project from there. For example, in June 2021, it was reported that Samsung would start manufacturing screens for the device; but towards the end of the year, it turned out that the Californians allegedly curtailed its development.
With John Prosser’s new leak, everything seems to indicate that those from Mountain View they are back in the race to gain a place in an increasingly demanded segment folding. Let’s not forget that there are already several brands that want to compete with Samsung, which today sets the trend in this sector. Xiaomi, for example, surprised the MIX Fold 2, which is the thinnest folding device to date. Oppo, Honor and even Huawei have already made their first experiences with this form factor.
If Google finally completes the launch of the rumored Pixel Fold, it should do so with a well-executed product. According to the information, it will be launched in May 2023. It’s price? At least $1799. We’ll have to wait to see its specs to see if it’s worth it.
