A couple of generations ago, there were a lot of rumors about Apple’s ability to include reverse charging in top-end iPhones, but so far this is a functionality that is not available. Actually, The iPhone 12 already included this technology, but it was not active. Since then, little has been known about the case. However, although it hasn’t been launched, everything indicates that Apple is still working on it.
At least that’s what they claim 9to5Mac, and indicate that the company claimed to launch this functionality as one of the novelties of the iPhone 14, but it was not possible to implement it for technical reasons. The same sources also confirm that Apple engineers continue to develop two-way wireless charging, as well as optimize software for it. but no specific release date.
Issues related to this feature’s delay, or why Apple hasn’t enabled reverse wireless charging on the iPhone 12, have not been disclosed. And they’ve had it for several years now.
Reverse charging powered by Apple MagSafe
All indications are that Apple is looking for more advanced functionality in terms of software, or waiting for next-generation iPhone battery improvements if they are also used to charge other devices. However, while this feature allows you to charge other mobile phones in Android terminals, the idea is to use your iPhone to charge other small devices such as the Apple Watch (though not Qi compatible) or AirPods for example.
In fact, Apple is one of the biggest supporters of wireless charging and has been leading the market since the launch of MagSafe. Moreover, in January of that year, it was announced that Apple and the Wireless Power Consortium were developing the next Qi wireless charger, also based on MagSafe.
This may be a game-changer, and Apple is waiting for a new MagSafe-based wireless charging standard to continue adding reverse charging to its devices. Something more standardized and based on magnetic systems, an important point on such a small surface as the iPhone.
In this sense, according to 9to5macApple is developing a dedicated reverse wireless charging user interface similar to the one currently used for MagSafe chargers and accessories. This will include an on-screen animation as well as a sound effect to indicate to the user when they are using reverse wireless charging.
