Have you ever thought about what your life would be like today without a cell phone? Sounds almost impossible, right? The truth is, we spend most of our days working, interacting and having fun with devices in our hands. Even social networks have contributed a lot to this, increasing our screen time and smartphone obsession even more. This is exactly what worried Martin Cooper, the inventor of the mobile phone.

Known as the ‘father of the mobile phone’, the American engineer said that everyone was ‘a little obsessed’ and revealed that he was not very satisfied with the point of the devices. Cooper, now 94, told AFP in an interview: “I break down when I see someone crossing the street looking at their cell phone. They’re crazy. But after a few people get hit by cars, they’ll realize. What are they doing?”

On the other hand, Cooper, who uses the Apple Watch and the latest generation iPhone (which shows that he is not disconnected from new technologies), can see the positive aspects of his creativity and says that mobile phones have and will continue to have enormous potential. “revolutionize education and health”. “I know this may sound like an exaggeration, but I want you to know that in a generation or two we will find a cure.”

Cooper created the world’s first mobile phone on April 3, 1973, using a cable and circuit block. At the time, the professional was working for Motorola and, accompanying a team of designers and engineers, had a very clear goal: to create mobile technology that was truly effective and useful. The result was the DynaTAC – Dynamic Adaptive Total Area Coverage device. It weighed about a kilogram and had a battery that lasted only 25 minutes.
