Have you ever typed a long text on your iPhone or iPad only to accidentally delete it? The first natural reaction is panic, and after a few minutes of frustration, you’ve probably decided to write this from scratch. But did you know that there is a method that will help you avoid this process? That’s right and it has to do with the undo and redo features on your iPhone or iPad..

Like any other modern operating system, iOS and iPadOS enable undo and redo options as you type or perform editing actions. For this reason, with just a couple of gestures, you can restore accidentally deleted text or return to an earlier step in the process. These features are just as useful as knowing how to move and copy files from iPhone or iPad to external storage.

If you want to know how to undo and restore text on your iPhone or iPad, you just have to follow the steps below, which we leave you here. We will show you four different methods for mastering this feature. Except, don’t forget to update your device to the latest available version to avoid incompatibilities.

Method 1: Shake your iPhone

In several generations of iOS, Apple included a feature called shake to cancel. With it, every time you shake your iPhone, a window will appear asking if you want to undo or redo a certain action. To enable this feature, do the following:

  1. Enter the menu Settings your iPhone.
  2. Go to the region Availability.
  3. Enter the section here Play.
  4. Now just find the function shake to cancel and activate the switch next to it.

Ready. Now every time you type and make a mistake, you can lightly shake your iPhone to see the redo or undo menu. If you tend to shake your device too much, you may see the message at an inappropriate time. In this case, you can deactivate this option, as there are three more methods left to show here.

Method 2: tap with three fingers

There are two different ways to implement this method. To undo the last text or action, simply tap the screen of your iPhone with three fingers twice in a row. Once that’s done, you should see your last modification gone and a message saying you just used the undo feature.

The second way to implement this method tapping only once with three fingers. When you do this, you will see a small action bar at the top of the screen. Here you can use the back arrow to undo and the forward arrow to redo.

Fortunately, most apps in the App Store work with Apple gesturesso no matter where you are, you can always use them to keep yourself from making a mistake.

Method 3: three-finger swipe

Swipe left or right with three fingers

Similar to the previous method. However, this time around, you’ll be touching the screen with more than just three fingers; you will also have to slide on them. This is a faster version of the previous processand here you don’t have to press any button, as the gesture will do everything for you.

  • Cancel: Tap the iPhone screen with three fingers and swipe left. You will see a small message appear indicating your action and the last thing you did will disappear.
  • Repeat: the same, but with sliding to the right. Of course, this time you may see the deleted text or action appear again.

Method 4: If you have a physical keyboard

If you have a physical keyboard connected to your iPhone or iPad, you can also use redo or undo commands. Just like on a Mac, tap Command / CTRL + Z cancel. With Command / CTRL + Shift + Z you will be able to recover the deleted text.
