Amazon is disconnecting older Kindle devices from its ebook store. Users of affected devices will no longer be able to access the store and therefore will no longer be able to download new ebooks. Access to the store is still possible from other devices.

Amazon is currently notifying users of the shutdown via an email shared on Reddit. Amazon said it will no longer be possible for Kindle readers to purchase or borrow e-books over the age of ten, starting August 17. Specifically, this includes the second generation Kindle International, Kindle DX International, Kindle Keyboard, and the fourth and fifth generation Kindle. Heise online has since received confirmation that the relevant device will lose access, for example, to the e-shop in Germany.

Of course, it will still be possible to download and read previously purchased books on older e-readers, and Kindle users will also be able to sync their libraries in the future. So you can buy new books on another device and then download and read them on your old Kindle.
