Start/Stop, the most controversial function of your car: should you turn it off to avoid breakdowns?

If you’ve ever noticed your sister’s new car or your father’s new SUV, there’s a Start/Stop button in the center console, next to the parking brake. By default, it is enabled and yes, it can cause damage.

This button is a smart on/off technology that turns off the engine when we come to a stop and turns it back on as soon as we press the clutch to put it back in gear.

The reason cars have this technology built in is because of European emissions regulations. According to European data, the Start/Stop system saves up to 15% of fuel per trip if it circulates around the city.

Unfortunately, when traveling on the road or motorway, this savings becomes almost zero.. And besides, the use of Start/Stop comes with several mechanical issues that lids don’t usually monopolize. It has advantages, but there are also disadvantages.

Let’s see what we’re dealing with:

  • Starter, alternator and battery wear: The constant turning on and off of the engine affects all three components of the car. Because of this, they wear out much faster than usual.
  • Excess temperature: Engines should be idling after they’ve been loaded, as coolants and lubricants do their job at this time, ridding the engine of heat and dirt. If it goes out at every traffic light, we remove this necessary maintenance.
  • More vibrations: Starting and stopping the engine means exposing the mechanics to constant vibrations, which affects the engine mounts. And these vibrations eventually suggest a more serious problem in the form of breakdowns or breakdowns in the mechanical components of the car.

As you can see, Start/Stop can be useful in cities with long traffic lights or very heavy traffic.since in these situations we will be stopped for a few minutes, so we will save fuel.

But in other situations, automatically starting and stopping the engine can cause more problems than solutions. So the next time you get in your car, decide wisely whether to activate this much loved and hated feature.
