We all love cucumbers, don’t we? That acidic sensation that surrounds the tongue only after every bite. can be described as organoleptic ecstasy. The same thought was given to an American woman who was nicknamed BT to preserve her privacy, whose case has been collected in the scientific literature for posterity. She was a fan of YouTube food videos. And I thought, “Why don’t I make history?” And the boy did it. But not in the way she expected.
BT is a 33-year-old woman who presented to the emergency room with nausea, vomiting, and a headache from another dimension. To the surprise of the toilets, the reason for this is the huge amount of pickles injected into his throat a few hours before. Specifically, BT ate an entire 1-gallon can of pickles: the equivalent of 5 and a half kilograms vegetable food. Yes, this is not a joke.
Hours before the pickle incident, BT were about to record a food challenge commonly known as “mukbang”. This time he chose cucumbers as the theme, and decided to go to the abyss. Encouraged by their audience, BT had to outdo themselves. He noticed that with every edible attack he made, his audience grew more and more. The next culinary challenge was to be legendary.
It sounded amazing in his head. If pickles were a healthy food, what could possibly go wrong with this vegetable-crazy foray? This is how he commented in front of his audience while broadcasting such a food outrage. Of course, he had to take several breaks to go to the toilet. His excretory organs were at their limit. As if that wasn’t enough, when he finished all the cucumbers, he also perked up from the remaining liquid. That is, in addition he drank the liquid that accompanied the pickles. This liquid, which usually accompanies the jam, has a preservative function and is called the governing or covering liquid: it usually consists of vinegar, oil, water, salt and sugar.
As you can imagine, drinking it is not the most pleasant experience, by and large. However, BT has never stopped striving to push your body’s health to the limit. After each sip of vinegar, sores appeared in his mouth. After finishing the whole can, BT felt very bloated. At 20 minutes intestinal chaos began to break out. His stomach was completely broken, and for several hours he could not tear himself away from the toilet. It seemed to him that his organs were liquefying and being thrown out in torrents.
I wonder what for all this time BT there was no need to drink water, which later had a huge impact on his clinical picture. The pain in my stomach got worse every minute. And the head was no less. This far outweighed any indigestion caused by spot eating. So she finally called the emergency room and she was immediately treated at the nearest hospital.
Excess salt for pickles almost caused his death
Once in the hospital, B.T. had difficulty expressing his thoughts. He was speechless, so the doctors had serious problems understanding his explanation about pickles. However, relevant tests revealed the truth: BT was full of pickles and his blood was full of sodium. This was not surprising, since a 1-gallon can of pickles contained at least 20 grams of sodium, not counting the liquid that was drunk later. Brine can easily contain an additional 10-15 grams of sodium, for a total of about 30 grams. But, of course, it is sodium, one of the chemical elements that make up table salt: sodium chloride. If we mean real salt, BT the equivalent of 80 grams of salt was placed between his chest and back.. Real salt savagery.

This excessive salt intake with pickles is a real problem: about 40 grams of salt can be lethal, which is half of what BT consumes. Therefore, it is not surprising that B.T. was losing consciousness. What the hell is going on with his brain? The explanation lies in balance mechanisms between sodium and water present in our body. When the amount of sodium is this high, the water tends to flow towards the sodium in order to balance its concentration. Thus, the water inside the body of B.T. moved into her stomach and intestines, which is why she felt so bloated.
In addition, BT lost massive amounts of water over several hours during their raids on the toilet. To the concentration of sodium in his blood was higher than usual. He lost too much fluid, which was not replaced, as we mentioned earlier: his own blood left all his organs without water to stop the salt massacre. In addition, his muscles were also stiff due to water loss.
His brain is completely destroyed
But the worst part of the pickle experience was his brain: it kept shrinking from the high salt content. Because the internal water was being sucked out, the blood vessels in his brain might have ruptured. This can cause bleeding, which can lead to permanent brain damage. How can such a problem be solved? The solution goes through replenish all fluid lost along the waytry to dilute the sodium gradually.

Unfortunately, something still went wrong. The brain tends to resist contractions to prevent water loss, so recovery does not occur immediately. So the problem was that if the medical team tried to rehydrate B.T.’s body, they risk expanding his brain to try and adjust the salinity: there was a real risk crushing the brain against the walls of the skull. After a few hours, BT’s blood pressure began to drop. His kidneys had completely stopped working, but both reflexes and pupillary responses were positive.
Maybe it’s not too late. And it’s not. When B.T. regained consciousness in the hospital, she was transferred to the intensive care unit and then sent home, where she was able to fully recover. After all, this story had a happy ending. However, remember that eating problems are extremely dangerous. They are associated with a risk to your health and can be fatal. Be very careful with them. Don’t try this at home, for your health.
