AMD will acquire American Pensando Systems for $1.9 billion, or €1.73 billion. Pensando was founded in 2017 and operates in the data center segment, which offers both hardware and a matching software stack. Team red wants to strengthen its position in the server market with this acquisition.

Pensando’s hardware is currently widely deployed in a variety of major customers, including Goldman Sachs, IBM Cloud, Microsoft Azure, and Oracle Cloud. These products contain the programmable packet processor, which should relax the CPU to increase system performance. Combined with proprietary software, this solution is said to outperform competing products by 8 to 13 times, although it’s unclear what cloud workload this claim is based on.

CEO Prem Jain and the rest of the Pensando team will join AMD’s Data Center Solutions Group, led by Senior Vice President Forrest Norrod. Existing business operations will continue, although the acquisition will enable them to cater to additional markets. The deal is expected to close in the second quarter of 2022.

AMD has now announced the completion of the acquisition. Pensando’s hardware and software portfolio should help AMD compete more effectively in the data center market, one of the industries it says offers the best growth opportunities. According to CEO Lisa Su, the expanded product line should enable the company to offer more products optimized for specific workloads.
